Appalachian Rollergirls are defeated by Miss B-havers of Columbia South Carolina 251-181
Feb 4, 2013 (Boone NC) Starting off the new year with a loss has fueled the Appalachian Rollergirls(ARG) to improve their teamwork and team dynamics for their 2013 season! ARG traveled to Columbia, South Carolina at the end of January to bout the Miss B-Havers.
"After taking the month of December off from derby practice, we only had 3 weeks of preparation for this bout. Not only were we focusing on conditioning and strategy during this short period of time, but we were also learning the rule changes that just went into effect for the 2013 season and beyond." said Doc Holidaze, aka Cori Holiday, Biology instructor at CCC&TI of Watauga.
ARG had a rough first half but came back for the second half by out scoring the other team by 14 points, "The second half was different than first because we had a new game plan. Coach asked each of us to make an improvement from the first half and we did! I'm really proud of the team for staying positive and giving 100%. Our newer players have really stepped up their gameplay." said president of ARG Ashley Laws aka Ashinator, student and bar tender.
The league was founded in March, 2010 and is now approaching their third season,
"I'm so excited for this season! Most of us started playing with little to no derby knowledge or experience whatsoever and it's taken tons of hard work to get to where we're at now. We're skating at a much more mature level and are really having to trust and count on everyone to work together in order to to be successful. I think our bout this past weekend showed that this was some of our best group dynamics and level of determination our team has ever reached and it's going to to stand out even more as the 2013 season unfolds! " said Eliza Hare aka Jabs Bunny, an official health associate.
In preparation for the 2013 season the team will be fundraising and helping around the community, otherwise they do not have a home game until May 4th at the George M. Holmes center on ASU campus.

PAYBACK- Appalachian Rollergirls beat French Broads of Asheville NC, final score 122- 119.
April 12, 2012 (Boone NC)- After taking a brutal beating last year from the Blue Ridge Rollergirl's French Broads of Asheville our local Appalachian Rollergirls(ARG) were determined to beat them in Asheville this year.
Last year when ARG hosted the French Broads here, in Boone, the Roller Girls lost by a humiliating 80. ARG had the lead for most of this game by about 20-40 points, but near the last 10 minutes of the second half ARG got into some serious penalty trouble. This allowed the French Broads to score some points and take the lead. It came down to the very last jam. ARG skater Diesel Pusher, aka Shannon Hampton scored the much needed winning points.
Diesel Pusher received MVP jammer for her efforts. "I had to dig deep for the extra energy at the end of the game," says Hampton. "It was awesome to receive the award for MVP. I really owe my success to my blockers for helping me get through and score some points."
The MVP blocker award went to Rolli Canolli, aka Jennifer Pillow,
ARG president . "I'm honored to win MVP," says Pillow, "but it is
all because of my teammates' great communication and determination
to win. We gave our all for ARG on Saturday."
ARG will be hosting the first home bout of their 2012 season at the George M. Holmes Convocation Center on Saturday April 28th at 5 pm. Tickets are on sale in advance for $10 online at www.theholmescenter.com and at Boone retail locations Black Cat Burrito, Lucky Penny and Boone Drug at Deerfield. Game day tickets are $12 and can be purchased at the door. Kids 12 and under are free and ASU/Caldwell student tickets with student ID are $5. Appalachian Rollergirls take down the Uncivil Warriors of Richmond 159-59
April 4, 2012 (Boone )- Victory on the road for Appalachian Rollergirls (ARG) once again was the outcome from this past weekend's game in Richmond Va. ARG played with only 12 players and dominated the Uncivil Warriors of Richmond with a score of 159-59.
"We played a B- team that had a lot of new skaters, and it was a good experience for our newer skaters to get some playing time," says ARG co-captain Jennele Vaquera, aka CoCo Janel and owner of Luck Penny Boutique in downtown Boone. "We have many veteran skaters, which makes it challenging for teams like Richmond to beat us, when they're constantly changing players and working towards having their best skaters on their A team." Adds Vaquera, "We have a strong mix of A and B level skaters. It makes us very competitive."
ARG will travel to Asheville this upcoming weekend to face the French Broads of Blue Ridge Rollergirls (BRRG), a team that played in Boone last year. Unfortunately ARG took a real trouncing from the BRRG game one year ago by a humiliating 80 points. "We're really looking forward to beating Asheville this time," says ARG skater and Captain Bone, Thugs, & Carmody aka Megan Carmody, owner of Black Cat Burrito.
"They're a neighboring team who we are close friends with, but we still want to get them back for the severe beating we took last year", says Carmody.
The Asheville bout is this Saturday April 7th at 5pm. Doors open at 4pm. This will be a double header with French Broads vs Appalachian Rollergirls at 5pm, followed by BRRG Allstars vs Carolina Hurticanes at 7pm.
Tickets can be purchased online at brownpapertickets.com. The tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door, and kids 12 and under are FREE. The bouts are held at Davis Event Center WNC Fairgrounds, 1301 Fanning Bridge Rd, Fletcher, North Carolina.
Most roller derby teams are active in their communities and do their best to give back. BRRG is a non profit organization and will be donating 10% of this event's profits to Girl Scouts of America!. For more information please visit blueridgerollergirls.com.
Appalachian Rollergirls Victory over Charlotte Speed Demons 2/25/12
Appalachian RollerGirls (ARG) started their 2012 season by taking
home a win against the Speed Demons of Charlotte with a come from
behind score of 114-102. Playing at the Metrolina Trade Expo to a
full house, ARG battled for the victory during most of the game.
ARG took the lead in the begining of the bout, but found
themselves down 23 points at the half.
"We had to make some changes and minor adjustments to beat them," said co-captain of ARG, Coco Janel, "We also had to calm down and just play derby in a relaxed yet aggressive manner."
Both teams having been launched in 2010, this was to be a good match of skills and strategy.
"This was a great game between two teams with excellent athleticism and sportsmanship" said ARG coach Scott Herman.
ARG will travel to Richmond VA for their next game on 3/31/12 to play against the Uncivil Warriors at the Greater Richmond Convention Center at 6pm. Tickets can be purchased online at brownpapertickets.com
